Switching it on at IBC 2019: The Switch to showcase expansion of live production services and increased global reach

  • Announces partnership with EI Towers in Italy to further extend its network in Europe
  • Features new live production services, including expanded at-home/remote production facility in Burbank, California

New York – September 9, 2019 – The Switch, the platform for the production and global transmission of live video, will showcase how it is expanding its services and extending its global reach across Europe and Asia Pacific at IBC 2019 in Amsterdam, September 13-17. The Switch, which is publicly debuting its new brand identity on its stand at the show (Hall 5, A73), is also unveiling its latest European partnership – an agreement with EI Towers, a leading provider of network infrastructure and services for broadcasters, streaming services and other rights holders in Italy. The partnership enhances the two companies’ ability to acquire live feeds in each other’s key markets and distribute coverage of events via an extensive and reliable international network.

The EI Towers deal comes on the heels of The Switch forging a similar partnership with MTI Teleport, Germany’s leading media backbone operator, also aimed at bolstering its position in Europe. Through the partnership with EI Towers, The Switch’s US customers now have access to games from any of the 24 stadiums in Italy’s Serie A, the country’s top soccer/football league – as they do with Germany’s Bundesliga through MTI – while Italian rights holders will now be able to broadcast live coverage of major North American sports, including NFL football and NBA basketball. The moves extend The Switch’s already strong footprint in Europe, where the countries it operates in now include the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, as well as Italy. The Switch also has a strong Asia Pacific presence, with extensive networks from China and Japan to Australia and New Zealand.

Eric Cooney, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Switch, comments: “IBC offers a great opportunity for The Switch to show broadcasters, over-the-top (OTT) operators, rights holders and others producing live events how they can benefit from our complete offering of live production services and our growing global reach. Our expansion in Europe by extending our presence on the ground and partnering with local leaders in transmission and production, such as EI Towers and MTI Teleport, underlines our strategy of offering support for the coverage of any major live event, wherever it is taking place  – seamlessly, efficiently and with all the necessary production facilities connected.”

Visitors to the Switch’s booth will see its new brand and learn more about:

  • How The Switch supports some of the world’s biggest and most exciting live events, drawing on nearly three decades of experience delivering live coverage
  • How the company is responding to the changing nature of live sports production amid the growing demand for more, new and niche sports
  • How The Switch is helping drive the rapid emergence of esports as a global live viewing phenomenon
  • How at-home/remote production has emerged as a solution to the challenge of meeting rising demand for live content while maximizing production budgets
  • Why leading broadcasters and rights holders in the worlds of sports, esports, news and entertainment choose The Switch to turn on their live content

The Switch, which is exhibiting at IBC for the second time, will also highlight its The Switch At-HomeTM service, expanded by the recent launch of an additional at-home/remote production facility in Burbank, California. The new investment is aimed at meeting rising demand for live content – driven primarily by sports and fast-growing events such as esports – through at-home/remote and complete live production services. Visitors to its stand will learn how the expansion is enabling more broadcasters, streaming platforms and other content producers to capitalize on the flexibility of at-home/remote production. The expanded The Switch At-HomeTM service has already successfully delivered remote events for the likes of CBS Sports, FOX, ESPN, Univision, MLS, NFL, and TVG Network.

“We are excited to have the perfect opportunity at IBC 2019 to update the industry on how we are enabling smarter live production,” says George Lopez, The Switch’s Senior Vice President of Operations. “Rapidly growing global demand for live event coverage is putting huge pressure on rights holders. We are giving them innovative, efficient ways to manage the production and transmission of live video, taking the pressure off and enabling them to focus on what they do best: producing great content.”

The Switch and MTI Teleport partner to extend global reach for live content delivery

NEW YORK – August 12, 2019 – The Switch, the platform for the production and global transmission of live video, has partnered with MTI Teleport, Germany’s leading media backbone operator, to combine and extend the global reach of the two company’s production services and transmission networks. The move makes it easier and more cost-effective for customers of the Switch and MTI to acquire live feeds and distribute content seamlessly via a reliable, extensive international network.

“Partnering with MTI Teleport is an important step in our international expansion strategy. It will enable us to help our customers continue to meet the growing global demand for live sports and event coverage, from any location,” says Eric Cooney, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Switch.

Thanks to the partnership, MTI will be able to offer German broadcasters access to The Switch’s entire global network, which includes the United States, Canada, PRC, The United Kingdom, France, Australia and New Zealand, while TV networks, streaming services and other content producers using The Switch will be able to cover live events from MTI sites in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. For instance, US customers of The Switch will have access to events such as live soccer matches from Germany’s Bundesliga, while MTI clients will be able to tap into NFL football, NBA basketball and other big league sports from North America – where The Switch has low-latency connectivity with every major professional arena or stadium.

MTI has already taken advantage of the growing relationship, working with The Switch to deliver live boxing coverage across Germany of the heavyweight title fight between Britain’s Tyson Fury and Germany’s Tom Schwarz at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas last month.

Ludwig Schaeffler, MTI Teleport’s Chief Executive Officer, notes, “We are always looking for ways to enhance our network reach and connectivity to deliver more events and the best possible media experiences for our clients. By partnering with The Switch, we are greatly extending our ability to do that and bringing significant value to our customers, and we hope to help The Switch do the same for its customers.”

Bring it home: The Switch Expands At-Home Production Services to Meet Growing Demand for Live TV

NEW YORK – [00:01 ET] August 1, 2019 – The Switch®, the platform for the production and global transmission of live video, has expanded its The Switch At-Home™ service with the launch of an additional at-home/remote production facility in Burbank, California. The investment is designed to meet rising demand for live content, driven primarily by sports events. Broadcasters and rights holders can now leverage The Switch’s unique combination of high-end production capabilities and unmatched network reach to cost-effectively capture, edit and package even more sports and live event content, delivering it to viewers anywhere in the world, on any device.

In a changing media landscape, live sports and events remain a huge draw across all viewing platforms. Broadcasters and content producers are covering more live events than ever – creating greater opportunities to engage audiences around the world. However, tightening production budgets are driving a need for more flexible and efficient alternatives to expensive outside broadcast (OB) operations.

“We’ve established ourselves as a leader in the at-home/remote space and see real value in further investing in and expanding our offering,” says Eric Cooney, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Switch. “Our business model ensures that The Switch is able to economically provide access to cutting-edge technologies while maintaining unmatched levels of service, giving our customers the ability to do the same with less – or even more with the same.”

The Switch’s expanded Burbank facility is designed to cope with the growing demand for live content production and provides a single platform for delivering multiple live productions, either simultaneously or as a standalone, from any location – the Burbank control room, the customer’s control center, or remotely – at any time.

“By providing the facility and the talent we are freeing customers to focus on their core business – the content,” says George Lopez, The Switch’s Senior Vice President of Operations. “At our extended Burbank at-home facility, we can help broadcasters, rights holders and content creators move towards a smarter economic model that allows a flexible approach to live production. This ensures they can quickly scale up or down to meet the needs of a Super Bowl, a basketball game, a global awards show or an esports tournament.”

The expanded service leverages The Switch’s robust, low latency transmission network or satellite links to deliver raw (ISO) feeds, audio, and equipment control to the Burbank Remote Control Room.

Lopez notes: “Customers have the flexibility to remotely control cameras and other equipment at the event site or produce a more traditional broadcast program. And, of course, we have the best team in the business on hand to support any aspect of the production process.”

As an established pioneer in at-home production, The Switch At-Home service has allowed customers to produce events from remote locations since as early as 2015.

The Switch At-Home is leveraged by Major League Soccer (MLS) and has successfully delivered at-home events for Fox, ESPN, Univision, NFL, TVG Network and CBS Sports. The Switch At-Home is also available for corporate enterprise customers.

The newly expanded The Switch At-Home service will be featured on the company’s booth at IBC 2019 – Hall 5: A73.

He is regarded as one of the early pioneers in professional gaming and has served in leadership roles in additional gaming entities.

The Switch CEO Chats Eutelsat Deal and International Expansion

While most of the major satellite operators are seeing a slowdown in their revenues generated from video services, some interesting deals are still being done For example, at the end of last year, Eutelsat made a deal with The Switch, a company specializing in live and on-demand video services with owned and operated facilities in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.

Via Satellite asked The Switch Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Keith Buckley why the company decided to do a deal with Eutelsat. “Eutelsat has a strong reputation as a great service provider, and their focus on global expansion aligns with The Switch to allow us to extend our respective footprints together,” he said. “Now, for example, through this partnership a customer will be able to go from any of The Switch locations around the globe to anywhere in the footprint of a Eutelsat satellite with the touch of a button, utilizing The Switch’s patented and award-winning Switch-IT user interface.”

With video deals harder to come by, why did The Switch decide to partner with Eutelsat, and what was the process like? “The Switch has a lot of great satellite partners and we will continue to focus on collaboration. What’s special about Eutelsat is that they’re strong in the places we’re targeting for growth. Because of the strength of the Eutelsat Europe, Middle East, and Asia (EMEA) footprint we were immediately interested in partnering,” said Buckley.

This year, Buckley said that The Switch is focused on expanding its service offerings and its international footprint. In the last year, along with significant investments to expand its studio facilities and The Switch at-home production capabilities, The Switch heavily invested in international growth by expanding its international sales team, entering into strategic partnerships and launching service offerings like The Switch Access. “The launch of The Switch Access has allowed users pretty much anywhere in the world to connect to The Switch network and our extensive set of dedicated venue and customer connections, and we will continue the successful expansion of that product. We will continue to actively pursue Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) opportunities as well,” added Buckley.

But as we enter this new video era, what does the future hold for satellite? Buckley offered an interesting perspective, given his background in the satellite space. “There’s no doubt that we’re in a continuing transition period as all distribution models, including satellite broadcasting, evolve with customer demands and behaviors. Satellite has always provided significant geographic and multicast benefits and will continue to be a critical part of the content ecosystem for a long time to come,” he said.

Buckley admitted that given the nature of The Switch’s business, satellite plays an integral part of its overall service offerings. With this partnership with Eutelsat, it is focusing on the integration of occasional-use workflows from its large number of dedicated connections around the world into the expanded coverage areas the Eutelsat footprint provides. Buckley believes tying The Switch’s expanding service offerings with Eutelsat’s evolving footprint will provide tremendous opportunity for growth — and will necessarily use more satellite capacity as an important part of the content ecosystem. “The Switch has continued to create a truly ubiquitous integrated contribution and distribution network. The strength of satellite is its reach and the strength of The Switch offering is our dedicated high-bandwidth, low-latency connections to worldwide sports and entertainment venues and the world’s largest content producers and distributors. As we continue to integrate satellite into our offerings we have a powerful opportunity,” he said.

The Switch has full-time connections to over 800 of the world’s largest content producers and distributors. Given the needs of its customers and the global nature of live content — both production and distribution — international growth has been, and continues to be, an integral part of its growth strategy. “Our strategy remains on those areas we’ve targeted for growth in the live and on-demand video business around the world. The landscape changes we see align well with the products and services The Switch has brought to market – namely that we can connect pretty much anyone from anywhere to our large network of venues and customers,” said Buckley.
